Career profile

Player biography

Philipp Grubauer developed from a young German prospect into a long-time NHL goaltender. He made his NHL debut with the Washington Capitals in 2013 and won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018. Soon afterward, the Capitals traded him to the Colorado Avalanche. Grubauer earned a larger role in Colorado and became a Vezina Trophy finalist after an outstanding 2020–21 season.

In July 2021, Grubauer joined the Seattle Kraken as an unrestricted free agent on a six-year contract. The move made him an important part of the expansion franchise from its first NHL season. After a difficult 2024–25 season, he rebounded strongly in 2025–26. He remained with Seattle for 2026–27, the final year of his contract. In addition, Grubauer represented Germany at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games and the 2026 IIHF World Championship. Overall, his career stands out for patience, technical development and success at the highest level.
