Career profile

Player biography

Thomas Greiss built a 14-season NHL career and became one of Germany’s most accomplished goaltenders. The San Jose Sharks selected him in the third round of the 2004 NHL Draft. He later played for Phoenix, Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders, Detroit and St. Louis. Greiss produced his strongest stretch with the Islanders, where he became a reliable starter and helped the club win a playoff series in 2016.

During the 2018–19 season, Greiss shared the William M. Jennings Trophy with Robin Lehner. The award recognized the Islanders for allowing the fewest goals in the regular season. Greiss eventually finished with 368 NHL regular-season games and 162 wins. He played his final season with the St. Louis Blues in 2022–23 and announced his retirement in July 2023. His calm style and consistency gave him a long career in a demanding position. He also became the first German-born goaltender to reach 100 NHL appearances.
