Christian Ehrhoff became one of the most productive German defensemen in NHL history. The San Jose Sharks selected him in the fourth round of the 2001 NHL Draft. He later played for Vancouver, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Chicago. His strongest NHL season came with the Vancouver Canucks in 2010–11, when he recorded 50 points. That spring, Vancouver reached the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Boston Bruins in seven games.

Ehrhoff finished his NHL career with 789 regular-season games and 339 points. He later returned to Germany and represented the national team at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. Germany won the silver medal in PyeongChang, providing one of the defining moments of his career. Ehrhoff first retired in 2018, but he returned to play for his hometown club in Krefeld during 2023–24. In April 2024, he announced his final retirement from professional hockey. His skating, puck movement and international experience made him a leading German defenseman of his era.
