Career profile

Player biography

Tom Kühnhackl built his NHL career as a hard-working depth forward with strong defensive habits. The Pittsburgh Penguins selected the Landshut native in the fourth round of the 2010 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut during the 2015–16 season and quickly became part of a championship team. Kühnhackl won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in both 2016 and 2017.

After three NHL seasons with the Penguins, Kühnhackl joined the New York Islanders as a free agent in 2018. He finished his NHL career with 232 regular-season games and 58 playoff appearances. His forechecking, penalty killing and willingness to handle difficult assignments defined his role. After leaving North America, Kühnhackl continued his career in Sweden before joining Adler Mannheim in 2023. In addition, he remained on Mannheim’s roster for the 2026–27 season. Above all, his two Stanley Cup titles remain the defining achievements of his NHL career. They place him among Germany’s most successful players.
