Moritz Seider quickly developed into one of the NHL’s leading young defensemen. The Detroit Red Wings selected him sixth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. After development seasons in the AHL and Sweden, Seider entered the NHL in 2021–22. He immediately handled major minutes, produced 50 points and won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. He became the first German player to receive the award.

Since that debut, Seider has remained a central part of Detroit’s defense and leadership group. In addition, his game combines physical strength, puck movement and the ability to play in every situation. Internationally, he has represented Germany at junior and senior tournaments. At the 2026 Olympic Winter Games, Seider served as an alternate captain alongside Tim Stützle. Leon Draisaitl wore the captain’s “C” for Germany. Seider’s early NHL success and growing leadership role have made him one of his country’s most important defensemen.
