Thomas Greiss, born in Füssen, Germany, built a 14-season NHL career after being selected by the San Jose Sharks in the third round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He debuted with San Jose in 2007 and later played for the Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders, Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues.
His strongest stretch came with the Islanders, where he helped the club win its first playoff series in 23 years in 2016 and shared the William M. Jennings Trophy with Robin Lehner in 2018–19. Greiss retired in July 2023 after 368 regular-season NHL games and 162 wins, finishing as one of the most accomplished German-born goaltenders in league history.
